I have been fascinated with the idea of doing the
JOG to
LE run since reading about such a trip in
Bike Magazine. The idea was furthered by reading Neal Champion's
(the current record holder)
account of his trip in 1984.
I want to do the end to end run down the
length - John O'Groats to Lands End - as lets be honest, if the
weather is poor and it's is getting dark who in their right mind
would want to be heading into the Highlands?
Living
in the South East the trip presents several problems - getting to the
start being the first - it's almost as far as the
JOG to LE run itself. The second being the run home from Land's End.
In total it's about a 1,500+ mile round trip.
Simon Hargreaves from Bike Magazine couldn't beat
Neal's time so I know that I don't stand a chance. Plus the
fact I am not as good a rider as either of them!! I'll set
myself a target time of 15 hours (average speed of
60mph).
Modern technology gives an advantage - with
gps location emails available from my
smartphone I won't have to mess around
getting witness signatures to prove location and time. I won't
have to wait until the shops at John O'Groats open to start off, so
as long as I fuel up the night before I could be off at 5am if I
wanted.
All that is needed is to prep the bike and pick a
week to go.
